Our family lives in the US for 70+ years (1950-2025)
Starting in September 1950 (for Larry) and 1955 (for Sophia) we came to the US as teenagers alone, no friend, and no assets except the promises of a college education and the possibility of living the American Dream. We met and got married in 1959 in the US. Today we are a family of 15 persons with four ethnicities in four living generations. This year of 2025 we were invited by the Greater Boston Chinese Cultural Association (GBCCA for short) to give a talk about our life experience and lessons learned in the past ¾ of a century. The talk plus Q&A took place on 6/25/2025 and lasted about 1.5 hours. The video of the event is available on YouTube with the link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dkrW9rz-rag . The first half hour of the 2.5 hour video are social interactions among audiences. Our English language presentation starts at about the 26 minutes mark with the Q&A in mixed English and Chinese dialect in the last half hour. The entire video mirrors the lives of an immigrant family in the “American Century” and the fact that the US still is that “shiny city on the hill” that people aspire to. It is still possible in the US to live on one income, bring up successful and independent children, accumulate a retirement saving a couple cannot outlive, and enjoy the fruits of your labor in your golden years.
The American Dream is still alive and well. You only need to believe in the future of the country and do your part to help its realizations.
