张纯如，Iris Chang，是我的同龄人，和我在同一年获得学士学位，她在University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign，我在南京大学。她后来写了发生在我生活学习多年的城市在1937年发生的那场惨剧: Rape of Nanking: The Forgotten Holocaust of World War II。
2000年，我在英国剑桥大学时买了她的这本书。看到某页上写道中国军队烧了老百姓的房子，一时没有理解。我知道作者的父亲张绍进先生是UIUC的理论物理教授，所以7月2日发了个邮件请张教授转给张纯如女士。

On page 128 of `The Rape of Nanking', it reads: `Chinese soldiers
burned down the home of....'. Should it be `Japanese soldiers...'?

7月3日，我收到了张女士的回信。
Dear Dr. Yu Shi,
Greetings - this is Iris Chang, author of THE RAPE OF NANKING. My father gave
me your e-mail message about p. 128 of my book. Unfortunately, it was the
Chinese, not the Japanese, who burned down the home of this 29-year-old
woman. If you check p. 69, you'll see that the Chinese military decided to
clear by fire a mile-wide battle zone around Nanking.

2003至2004学年，我在张女士成长和学习的UIUC，正是在他父亲所在的物理系凝聚态理论组。不过张先生已经退休，住在加州。2004年11月，我已在中国，看到张女士离世的消息。Shocked。
今天，几位朋友偶然谈到张女士和张先生，其中一位前辈与张先生较熟，曾同时在普林斯顿访问。突然想起我和张女士的这次电邮来往。回来搜出当时的邮件，写下此文，算是对张女士的纪念。
