∮1 博古通今的德国植物学院士Hermann Graf zu Solms-Laubach (1842--1915)

          德国著名植物学家和古植物学家Hermann Graf zu Solms-Laubach (1842--1915)于1842年出生于黑森州(Hesse)的Laubach小镇。他早年先在黑森州Giessen小镇求学，后到瑞士的弗里堡(Fribourg) 和日内瓦(Geneva)念书。青年时代的Hermann Graf zu Solms-Laubach先后到柏林和Halle学习。

         1872年，Hermann Graf zu Solms-Laubach到今属法国的斯特拉斯堡(Strasbourg)工作，担任斯特拉斯堡大学著名真菌学家Heinrich Anton de Bary(1831--1888)的助手。1879年，Hermann Graf zu Solms-Laubach担任哥廷根大学教授及植物园主任。1888年，Heinrich Anton de Bary辞世，Hermann Graf zu Solms-Laubach重返斯特拉斯堡大学，继承其老师的学术衣钵，直到1908年退休。

             Hermann Graf zu Solms-Laubach是一位博古通今的学者。他的植物形态解剖学和系统学研究涉及藻类、真菌、苔藓和蕨类等门类，也涉及某些栽培植物（农作物）。Hermann Graf zu Solms-Laubach在古植物学领域也取得了重要成就。1887年，Hermann Graf zu Solms-Laubach出版了德国历史上的第一本古植物学教科书，他阐述了用植物学家的眼光对古植物学的认识。

            1891年，Hermann Graf zu Solms-Laubach的古植物学教科书之英文版在英国出版。译者为Henry E.  F.  Garnsey (1826--1903)。

          Hermann Graf zu Solms-Laubach是德国植物学和古植物学发展历史上的著名学者之一。他于1884年当选为德国科学院院士(German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina)、1896年当选为美国人文科学院外籍名誉院士(Foreign Honorary Member of American Academy of Arts and Sciences)、1902年当选为英国皇家学会外籍院士[Foreign member of the Royal Society of London (ForMemRS)]。

--1842: Born in Laubach, a small town of the federal state Hesse (黑森州), Germany;

--Studied in Giessen of the federal state Hesse, Germany and Fribourg & Geneva in Switzerland;

--1865: Completed the dissertation in Latin in Berlin, entitled“De Lathraeae generis positione systematica”[Friedrich-Wilhelms-Universität; Latin: Alma Mater Berolinensis];

--1872: Worked as a private lecturer for the famous botanist Heinrich Anton de Bary (1831--1888) at the University of Strasbourg;

--1879: Appointed as full professor the University of Göttingen, and director of the University botanical garden;

--1883--1884:  Made an expedition to Java and other regions;

--1884: Elected to the German Academy of Sciences Leopoldina;

--1887: Published the first textbook of palaeobotany in German—“Einleitung in die Paläophytologie vom botanischen Standpunkt aus”；

--1888: Returned to the University of Strasbourg and became the successor of Heinrich Anton de Bary (1831--1888);

--1891: Published the English version of palaeobotany textbook, entitled“Fossil Botany, being an Introduction to Palaeophytology from the Standpoint of the Botanist” [translated by Henry E. F. Garnsey (1826-- 1903)];

--1896: Hermann Graf zu Solms-Laubach of University of Strassburg was elected to a Foreign HonoraryMember of American Academy of Arts and Sciences;

--1902: Elected to a foreign member of the Royal Society of London (ForMemRS);

--1908: Got retired;
--1915: Died in Strasbourg at age of 73.
