根据天文学家 Clifford Stoll 的短视频整理:

When you’re doing genuine scientific research, you don’t set out thinking, “I’m going to make money from this.” Nor do you aim merely to create things that solve practical problems—that belongs to engineering, not pure science. Pure science starts with a question and an absence of answers, then seeks to work out reasonable explanations. To me, good science is its own source of joy and intellectual delight. If you pick up the violin solely to get rich, you lose sight of its true purpose, and the same goes for science. If you study crystal structures only to develop better devices or new solid-state technologies that you believe will reshape the world, you are no longer pursuing pure science. I prefer using science to gain a deeper understanding of the world around us. Science is an opportunity to explore and uncover truths, rather than being forced to design things with immediate, practical applications. There is a clear divide between science and engineering. Science is often free-spirited inquiry, an attempt to understand how everything works. Engineering focuses on building functional, useful devices. Engineering achievements can often be commercialized for profit, or at least prove fascinating enough to spark public interest. I care far more about essential truths than superficial appearances. I wonder what creates distinct sounds and what causes such differences. I ponder why certain substances can move objects, and I even find unexpected parallels between internal natural resonances and electrons orbiting the nucleus of a hydrogen atom—connections you rarely discover until you delve into quantum mechanics. I see science less as a problem-solving tool and more as a way to satisfy innate curiosity. The joy lies precisely in not knowing the answers. What truly drives me is always a question. Questions draw us forward, while periods mark endings. Every new life is born with a question mark, full of mystery, wonder and anticipation: what lies ahead, and who will this person grow to be? Every final resting place draws a period to a life story. I am endlessly drawn to question marks, eager to see where curiosity will lead, and to reflect on the path we have traveled.
