Abstract
Under the action of mechanical forces, non-centrosymmetric piezoelectric materials undergo remarkable electron–hole separation, with efficient charge migration. This property enables piezoelectric materials to efficiently convert mechanical energy into electrical energy, resulting in significant achievements in the field of energy harvesting. Application of the piezoelectric effect in environmental remediation, particularly for water and air pollution, is an emerging area with potential that should not be ignored. This report introduces and comprehensively describes various methods that drive piezoelectric catalysis (ultrasound, stirring, ball milling, and hydrodynamics) and their useful pairing with other techniques (e.g., piezoelectric photocatalysis and piezoelectric–persulfate catalysis). Recent advances in piezoelectric catalytic materials (organic and inorganic) that are currently popular are also summarised, and innovative approaches for enhancing the performance of these materials (heterojunction engineering, heteroatom doping, phase-change engineering, noble-metal deposition, defect engineering, morphological engineering, etc.) are discussed. This timely and systematic review will support researchers studying piezoelectric materials for the removal of organic pollutants from wastewater and will undoubtedly contribute to the development of this research field.
