Abstract

With the growing demand for sustainable energy solutions, hydrogen has proven to be a promising alternative because of its high energy content and no carbon emissions. Compared to alkaline hydrogen evolution reaction (HER), acidic conditions offer a more abundant supply of protons, leading to higher efficiency in the HER. Consequently, acidic HER has garnered significant attention in both academic and industrial settings. However, the challenge of poor stability under acidic conditions persists. In recent years, there has been a substantial increase in publications on acidic HER, highlighting the importance of timely reviews on this topic to inform the rational design of catalysts with high catalytic activity and stability for acidic HER. This review provides a comprehensive overview of the fundamental mechanisms of acidic HER, the electrochemical performance metrics, and the latest advancements in catalyst design and applications. By emphasizing the progress and challenges in this field, the review aims to offer insights for the development of efficient and durable HER catalysts, ultimately contributing to the broader adoption of green hydrogen production technologies.
