2003年６月１１日(紐約時間), 星期三(農歷五月十三), 大晴，溫度SOMERS地區Ｆ7５°－－８１Ｆ°；来美第13天
早上６﹕２５－７﹕００晨練﹐在高爾夫俱樂部處觀測游戲規則﹐這是第五次晨練活動。
今天是星期三不到８點就有專車前來收集塑料製品和報紙雜誌﹐這是每週一次的常規﹐而每週二五是專收食品等廢料。至于有污染的物品和大件廢舊傢具則在半年左右的規定時間內來集中收集。
上午10:50--11:30和吕在上坡方向散步﹐就某一片Unit﹐細心觀察。

X今天在醫院裡檢查一切正常,從我們來美國她已經是的四次去醫院檢查了,看來美國的醫生間的相互聯係也是很少的﹐今天專門檢查羊水量狀況﹐但是醫生沒有看上次檢查的情況。她的預產期是７月１３從目前看問題不大。她為此付出了太多的心血應該得到期望的回報。
Ｘ說周的一篇論文已經得到影響很大的雜誌決定發表的消息。另外有兩篇論文待修改。晚上他談到他有發明的四個專利而申請專利的ＩＢＭ公司﹐有律師為他寫不同的專利申請﹐其術語要另常人難以理解﹐才算有學問。
下午X為我填寫申請准許汽車駕駛問題聯係社會保障局打電話和網上查詢﹐為如何獲得社會保障卡和遺失後如何申請補發費了不少週折。我們還專門給沈天佑﹐曾之萬打電話詢問﹐他們說遺失了只要申明自己的號碼和名字就可以找出還說憑護照可以申請。這裡的關鍵是一憑護照能否申請社會保障卡﹐二遺失了社會保障卡能否申請補發﹐需要怎樣的手續。因為申請汽車駕駛執照必須有社會保障卡。
晚上和邵雁通電話﹐她已經畢業﹐準備到密執安去工作﹐但還要等待資格考試。一個﹔歷史系畢業的研究生到了美國改學藥物學專業一學六年終于畢業需要付出多大的精力和做出多少犧牲﹐實在不易﹐這裡有一種精神﹐有志者事竟成。
１７﹕１５－１９﹕２５分﹐X帶我們到Ｄanbury市的 Maicy去購買特價商品這裡是一季一天的特價﹐所以車水馬龍﹐商店生意很好。從這裡到Ｄanbury市的 Macys要近３０分鐘光景﹐Ｄanbury在康州﹐是Ｚ上班的地方﹐這裡的Macys比White Plains的Macys要近些。Macys一直是美國最大的百貨商店﹐在全世界也獨佔領風騷。我們在那裡買了一套１４件的不沾的Cookware,原價99.98US$,現價52.99US$(如果是不銹鋼的則原價相同,現價29.99US$),另加康州地方稅6%,3.00US$,共52.99US$。這一套餐具確實是便宜的。還買了一件特大號（King)的Coord Bedding 原價49.98US$,現價27.98US$,州稅6%,1.68US$。這套被子原來是中國造﹐不僅這套﹐其他所有的被套幾乎都是中國造。而忖杉（Dress shirts)兩件每件19.49US$,共38.98US$,但是沒有收地方稅不知何故。 購物時間分別為６﹕２７﹐６﹕３９﹐６﹕５４。
下面是Ｚ傳來的有關Somers的歷史簡介﹕
Somers??y any other name?/I> The town we call Somers was originally occupied by Kitchawanks, part of the Mohegan tribe, who called the land Amapaugh, meaning ??resh water fish.?This land was located in the eastern segment of an 83,000-acre tract that King William III of England granted to Stephanus Van Cortland of New York City in 1697. The part of Van Cortland Manor that ultimately became Somers and Yorktown was known as the Middle District, or Hanover. Settlement in the Somers area began after Van Cortlandt抯 death in 1700 and the final partition of his estate in 1734. Early European settlers included tenants and freeholders from neighboring areas, among them English, Dutch, French Huguenots and Quakers. It wasn抰 until March 7, 1788, when the first town meeting was held at an inn, owned by Benjamin Green, that the town named Stephentown was established. However, there already existed a Stephentown in Renssealaer County. The resulting confusion, particularly in mail delivery, lead to a change in the name to Somerstown and in 1808 to the Town of Somers. The town was named as a tribute to Captain Richard Somers, a young naval officer from New Jersey who lost his life in the Tripolitan War. A memorial in West Somers Park was erected in his honor at Memorial Day ceremonies in 1958.
The growth of Somers?/I> In the early 19th century, Somers, or as it was then generally known as Somerstown Plains, contained hat factories, carriage factories, three hotels, two general stores, an iron mine, a milk factory, and a sanctuary for boys operated by the Christian Brothers. There was a constant stream of goods and passengers to large markets and cities through the village. As early as 1809, a weekly newspaper was established, 揝omers Museum and Westchester County Advertiser? Though primarily agricultural, the rural economy also supported a varied population of weavers, preachers, merchants, cabinetmakers, doctors, lawyers, teachers and servants. A good system of roads was maintained and some operated as commercial 搕oll roads.?The railroad, developed in the 1840抯, bypassed the town of Somers, and affected a decline in growth over the next hundred years. The presence of the railroad in nearby communities did allow the agricultural emphasis to move towards dairy production and fruit growing, since the products could be shipped to markets in the city. Industries continued to thrive, with grist, paper, saw and clothing mills operating in the area. Between 1890 and 1910, the Croton and Muscoot Rivers were flooded to create the New York City Reservoir system thereby changing the local landscape considerably. In the 1920抯 small lake communities began to spring up as vacation havens for summer visitors and farmers?guests. Hamlets became larger and firmly established to accommodate the influx of lake and country loving folk, eventually becoming year-round communities. After World War II the rolling hillside country attracted weekenders from New York City, brought into closer proximity by the proliferation of automobile travel. The construction of I-684 in the mid-70抯 facilitated additional residential and commercial development. IBM and PepsiCo built complexes in the 1980抯, bringing an international corporate element into the community.
Hachaliah抯 Elephant?/I> In 1804 a farmer and cattle merchant named Hachaliah Bailey acquired an African Elephant he named ?B>Old Bet,?and she was one of the first elephants to come to America. Although Bailey had planned to use the elephant for heavy-duty work on the farm, the throngs of people who came to Somers to see the elephant gave him the inspiration for showmanship on a large scale, and he began exhibiting her throughout the northeast. His success in this venture attracted numerous partners and rivals from local families, who joined in the business of importing and exhibiting exotic animals. The resulting thriving menagerie business paralleled the development of the circus in America, and by the 1830抯 the two forms of popular entertainment merged to form the basis of the modern American circus. In fact, the majority of early 19th century circus proprietors came from Somers and neighboring towns in northern Westchester and Putnam counties. This has led to Somers being titled ?B>The Cradle of the American Circus.?nbsp;
The Elephant Hotel In 1824, after Hachaliah抯 elephant was killed while on tour in Maine, Bailey erected the Elephant Hotel to commemorate the elephant, which had been responsible for his fortune. In 1827 he immortalized 揙ld Bet?with a statuary likeness of her on the village green. Today it is stands as Somers?symbol and is also part of the official seal of the Somers Town Government. Over the years the building has functioned as an inn, a teahouse, a private residence, and a post office. The Farmers and Drovers Bank, chartered in 1830 as the second banking institution in Westchester, adjoined the Hotel, as did a major dance hall that was a focal point of fun, frolic and business transactions for farmers, travelers, and hotel guests. It soon became the economic and social center of Somers and the surrounding area. Not only was it the meeting place for the menageries/circus owners, it was also a stagecoach stop for travelers between New York City and points to the north and east. In 1835, the Zoological Institute was incorporated at the Elephant Hotel. Between 1836 and 1939 揟he East Wing?occupied the present parking lot area, and increased the capacity of the Hotel to accommodate overnight guests. It was in 1927 that the Town of Somers purchased the hotel from the Bailey family. The Town Offices, Somers Historical Society, and Circus Museum currently occupies the Elephant Hotel.
tid bits?/I> Numerous historic buildings remain as outstanding examples of the 19th century environment, such as Mount Zion Church (1794) and the Wright-Reis Homestead (1867), donated to the town by Carolyn Wright Reis. The Somers Historical Society oversees these properties and makes them available for public visitation several times a year. The Society also has available for sale copies of 揝omers Its People and Places?which was published to commemorate the 200th anniversary of the town of Somers. It is a handsome hardcover book that contains 304 pages, 524 pictures, illustrations, and maps. The cost is $35. Additional town of Somers and circus memorabilia are available for purchase at the Historical Society Museum including a town of Somers afghan and mini Elephant Hotel. |

今天上午四位維修工人運來一堆翻修房頂的材料﹐並在事前在房頂上進行測量﹐這是社會管理的免費服務項目。
Z今天回到家已經晚上10點﹐他工作任務很重﹐現在又是攻讀博士學位的緊張時刻﹐每天還堅持游泳以保持身體健康﹐實屬不易。
晚上邵雁來電話專門談到吕服用維他命DC最有效﹐並发來電子郵件。晚上還收到了王希發來的電子郵件。
晚上個我們在郵租(www.rentchinesemoive.com)VCD單子中選祖若干片子。

今天來美國已經整整兩周了﹐一切都已轉入正規。
今天離X的預產期還有一個月。

昨晚因為下著大雨﹐我將放在外面大門口邊上的一袋垃圾今早已經一片狼藉﹐原來那些飢不擇食的鳥兒們已經將它叼到滿地﹐還在不斷地叼食﹐於是急忙下午打掃收拾﹐引為教訓。
上午X和Z幫助安裝好打印機。下午5點回來時換好了墨合。７點半去接Ｚ。

上午9点半,我们去Danbury的早上Ｘ為購買嬰兒用具在網上查询叫做Brilington 商店的地方,谁知那里并没有儿童用品的供应(http://www.bbabydepot.com,在附近最近的有Padanaram Rd., Danbur)。于是我們到上次來的的COSCO購買無繩雙機電話(可以掛四根線),每部120美元。在加足油(Molble,每加侖1.78US$)，我們又去附近的First Union Bank 取 出 美 元 后，就直奔ＢabySus的專賣店,那里有各種各樣的兒童我們這次的目標主要是嬰兒的專用床,Ｃarsite等,因為Ｃarsite本身就很大,在車尾部不能全部放進,所以只能放棄今天買床的計劃。

今天上午6:30-7:05分,沿着上下坡晨练一圈,共35分钟，这是第6次晨练。
今天下午上传文件8份（篇）。
昨晚Z和X去办公室复印论文，晚上11点多才回。我试着上网但是不认。今天早上问X他们，测试了好几种方法，也未能解决问题，估计不是IBM在维修就是因为安装中文之星引起对于内部系统的局部破坏，迄今仍然不能上网。下午用X的电脑上网传发文件。晚上Z为我准备安装紫光最佳输入法，这种方法是他今天刚从学校里由一个国内来的学生中得知的。
11：40—15：40分，X和我们去Sears去看床，但是那里正在熄业，接着我们在Century Parkway Road 看婴儿床，找到了BuybuyBabe的婴儿专用商店，这里的婴儿用品十分丰富，比昨天看到的更加专业和丰富，而且带有零售兼仓储性质。我们仔细比较了20多种床，看中了其中的两个，并且也看了床垫等，准备下周二和X来购买。随后我们去Apple Farm蔬菜店购买蔬菜，这里和其他商店不同，需要现款支付。购买后，又去金山(Kam Sen Foods, LLC.22 Barker Ave. White Plains NY 10601,914-428-4500)购买中国菜。出来时14：33共63.46元,无税,记得8日10:02在这里是87.94元;而这次在Apple Farm购买了53.73元,上次是43.00元。由于录入过快，错误常有，上次在金山多记了花生一项，这次则少记了两条鱼。窝火回到家近四点。这次吃了早中饭出来是个可取的办法。
我们上周购买的电饭锅，今天不Work 了，质量之差令人惊讶，而这居然是中国造。Big Kim商店里的许多商品是中国造。
上午是全面清洁后第一次用除尘器在地毯上除尘。
晚上Z为我演示了出版系统的软件，还装上了美国地图软件。

今天上午6:30-7:05分,沿着上下坡再次晨练一圈,共35分钟，这是第7次晨练。
今天上午Z告诉我一个查询中文网址的信息，并且演示，查出黄安年名下有343条之多，其中有些网站的报道，以前我并不知晓。但是个别内容不属于我的也被电脑选入其中。
X上午去医院检查两次，第一次说小孩在睡觉没有办法检查，然后再次检查，完全正常，X为之放心。
全天集中将来美后存的TXT文件转成Word 文件，但是个别不认。同时开始做在学术交流网上发布文件的目录。
下午X回家后给IBM管理打电话问讯如何解决我的电脑不能上网问题，经过几次检查发现在系统中时间被改成2001年的了，所以不认，调整后问题终于得到解决。即刻上网看消息。
今天下午上传文件5份（篇）。
X带回消息说，她们班上的张建武在为北大去吉林招生途中发生车祸死亡，她急忙给同学打了一通电话，研究作出的哀思反映。

今天上午7:00-7:30分,沿着上下坡再次晨练一圈,共35分钟。在上坡线路上除37-44外右侧45-46;52-56;69-76;77-82;83-89;210,211,216-226;208-211;209;212-215共9个湾。左侧则是47-51；57-61；62-68；94-97，100；98-99；101-114；115-118；119-130共9个湾。在坡顶分成三叉道，一侧是131-207；210，211，216-266；一侧则是3-130；208-226；227-266。这是第8次晨练。
上午在网上处理文件,发出12份(篇)。
X上午8：10-12：40上班，2：10分驱车和我先去White Plains领Application For Drive License or Non-driver ID Card, 在商场的地下室，排队约15分钟，问清不在那里办理。需要先打电话（800） 772-1213 TTY：（800） 325-0788Social Security Online Office Locator 那里的Office Address 在Suite 4A 297 Knollwood Rd, White Plains, NY 10607 。然后去Peekskill DMV 1045 Park Street, Peekskill, NY 10565(From White Plains DMV) or to Yonkers DMV 1 Larkin Plaza Rongers, NY 10701.申请学习驾车训练问题。
然后去Big K Mark退货（Rice Cook)，同时买了一个立地枱灯。即去buybuy BABY 选购婴儿的床Firenze Crib(179.99US$)及床垫（Perfect Rest)129.99US$ 税率为6%。4：30开始回家，到家后5：05分。即进行组装，6点完成了组装任务。
晚上Z和X帮助下载www.goole.com网上索引资料,我的共343条,含重复，杨玉圣1150条，李慎之3990条，刘宗绪251条。

上午和下午为www.Google.com中有关我的名字下载并转发在学术交流网上（分为10篇）。
下午2点半X回来吃饭，上午医生的检查说她情况很好。Z晚上近8点回。下午收到rentchinesewieve,com寄来VCD录像片，其中有刘老根、孝子贤孙、红色康乃馨等，晚上全家在电视机前半场看《刘老根》录像带。
下午6点多晚饭前，和X在附近散步。
上午收到宋广波的电子邮件，吕回信。
2003年6月19日(纽约时间),星期四(农历五月二十),晴,温度Somers 地区64F°—68F°；来美后第21天
上午6：30-7：05分，沿上下坡路线晨练，在高尔夫球场看见一只高大的鹿，这是第9次晨练。上午11：15-12：10分，我们沿上坡路线散步，见到两位美国朋友对我们说：t is not rain, it is fine.
Y下午2：30分回，饭还没吃完，带工作回家干。Z在医院检查，情况尚好。
下午3点，Y在IBM网上购物，程序是上网www.ibm.com/shop/us/epp进入Y的机器，查Notes Book到T series, 找T23，然后Check Out,
总计1068.93US$,其中价格999US$,税款69.9US$(税率7%)。估计一周之内可以收到。

全天写了一篇关于网上交通路线指导的文章。
中午沈天佑从洛杉矶打来电话，他们刚从拉斯维加斯四天三夜活动后回来，受到VIP的待遇，一切免费而且待遇从优。因为沈众已经在那里留下了很好的记录，所以能够住最好的房间，得到最好的享受。

Y12：40分回，还在上午10点多，法拉盛的沈先生来电话说,今天下午有时间来装卫星天线,此事需要通知Y,但是由于Y和President联系到下午3点多才接通说可以,等到再和身沈联系已经来不及了。于是商议在下星期三来安装。（718-661-3578）
下午四点出我们去Sale Century去参观，这里的房子很紧俏。我们参观了Harvard，Stanford，Armonk三个房型，其价格分别是：
