We are pleased to announce that Baroness Susan Greenfield CBE—a renowned neuroscientist, Emeritus Professor of Pharmacology at the University of Oxford, Founder and CEO of Neuro-Bio Ltd, and a non-political life peer in the UK House of Lords—has been elected as an Academician of the World Academy for Artificial Consciousness (WAAC), in recognition of her sustained pioneering contributions to the neural mechanisms of mind and consciousness, brain function and neurodegeneration, and cognitive change in the technological era.

Baroness Greenfield has long worked to bridge testable brain mechanisms with explainable questions about mind and consciousness. Within Oxford’s research ecosystem, she pursued key molecular and signalling pathways— including work on cholinesterase and its links to neurodegeneration—advancing understanding of disorders such as Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s disease, and helping drive translational directions. In 2013, she founded Neuro-Bio to develop a disruptive approach to Alzheimer’s grounded in her research programme, including drug-development efforts targeting mechanisms implicated in neurodegeneration. Beyond her academic research, she has expanded the public reach of consciousness science through science communication and institutional leadership: she served as Director of the Royal Institution of Great Britain (1998–2010)—the first woman appointed to the position—and has published widely on the mind as well as on how contemporary technologies may shape cognition.

Global Collaboration and Academic Ecosystem

Academicians of the World Academy for Artificial Consciousness hail from institutions such as Harvard University, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, the University of Cambridge, the University of California, the French Academy of Sciences, the University of Padua, the University of Queensland, Columbia University, and the University of Exeter. Honorary Academicians come from a wide range of countries and regions, including the United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, Italy, Sweden, Canada, Australia, Spain, and China. In addition, leading scientists from prominent research institutes and technology companies—such as Google, the Allen Institute for Brain Science, and ZEEKR—also participate.
