武老师昨天引介了Wade Graham的新书Dream Cities: Seven Urban Ideas That Shape the World（http://blog.sciencenet.cn/blog-1557-997875.html），我顺便找来看了一眼，正好看到城堡的一章。作者先引用了JacksonLears的一句话：一切历史都是欲望的历史（all history is the history of longing）——这是Jackson在《国家的重生》（Rebirth of a Nation: The Making of Modern America, 1877-1920）引言的第一句话，因为国家的一切都可追根到人的欲望（all can be ultimately traced to the viscera of human desire）。

作者还引用了两行诗：

Safe upon the solid rock the ugly houses stand:

Come and see my shining palace built upon the sand!

是女诗人Edna St.Vincent Millay的Second Fig，全诗也就是这两行。岩石上呆矗着丑屋，不如我沙滩的阳光美庐。没读过M的作品，不知为何写这样的句子；原诗是她系列小诗Figs fromThistles中的一首，而这个诗题出自马太福音：“Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles?”（Matthew 7:16），“蒺藜里岂能摘无花果呢？”那么，沙滩上怎么有与昂光别业呢？

Graham也许想借诗句来写他对栖居的“longing”。他住在洛杉矶北150km的Santa Barbara（SB），那儿令人有时空隔离之感（separation in space and time），一来远离了大城市的喧嚣，把雾霾和拥堵留给了别人（others not fortunate enough to live here），二来是小城建筑令人仿佛穿越到了更美的世界（psychological achievement of a sense of time travel to a better world）。这种心理的隔绝比距离的远近更重要。难怪历来的土豪（nouveauxriches）都喜欢投资古堡，让城堡的古朴洗净他们的铜臭味儿（washing that bad, arriviste smell out of their wealth）。

时空隔离的错觉（illusion）是它满足了人们的另一个愿望：生活在现代城市却又远离它的work,toil, struggle, urgency……SB的新建“老”建筑就令人产生那样的错觉，仿佛一个Utopia的世界。我们大都not fortunate enough to live there的，也不好空讲什么诗意的栖居，能在陋室生几分乌托的幻影，也一样能满心欢喜。
