2008年2月，我曾以“君子爱“生” 得之有道”为题，纪念那时去世不几天的吴瑞先生（ http://www.sciencenet.cn/m/user_content.aspx?id=15910）。 介绍了吴瑞先生的精神遗产。

 

那时，我不知道投身教育和研究的吴瑞先生，还对物质遗产有安排。

 

吴瑞先生除了自己的研究工作以外，一个很大的善举是建立CUSBEA，帮助约4百位生物学的中国学生得以留学美国。

 

这些学生在1998年左右，发起成立学会。不是CUSBEA成员的我，当时在讨论中提议学会名称为“吴瑞学会”，好像是傅新元等支持，学会用了这个名称。在洛杉矶成立时，吴瑞也到会。其后不久捐款给学会，好像是两万五千美元左右。

 

这个名称有争议，特别是对于不是CUSBEA出身的，觉得有局限性。几年后，学会改名CBIS（华人生物学家协会）。有些人觉得改名不是问题，有些人觉得很好，有些人觉得很不好。

 

对于吴瑞来说，我们只能猜想，如果当初不用他的名字，可能更简单。用了再改，可能不是特别舒服。所以，我自己有责任。

 

以后，CBIS开会，吴瑞仍然到会，但是更名的事情，使有些人不知吴瑞的心里是否意见。

 

吴瑞去世后将近两年的前几天，CBIS突然收到吴瑞家庭律师来函：吴瑞先生将约36万美元的遗产捐献给CBIS。这个数字大于他遗嘱中同时给吴瑞任教的 Cornell大学的捐款。

 

得知这个消息，有个当时很支持改名的会员，深受感动。

 

知道吴瑞生活情况的人，也深有感触。他平时自己生活节俭，他和夫人的住房可能不如所有他当年帮助出国的学生、现在事业有成的专业人士。

 

吴瑞心中对中国学生的关爱，一目了然。

Ray Wu Trust Fund Donates $360K to CBIS 

 

The Chinese Biological Investigators Society (CBIS) gratefully announce that it has recently received very kind and generous donations from the Ray Wu Estate and Trust a total of $359,699.67. CBIS will set up an endowment fund to support its operation and awards in Dr. Wu’s name.

 

Dr. Ray Wu was a Professor at Cornell University and a pioneer in the field of molecular biology. Among his numerous transformative contributions to biology, Dr. Wu was the first to sequence DNA and was responsible for development of many methods in molecular biology. He was also the leader in transgenic technology to development new strains of rice crops.

 

Dr. Wu was a tireless advocate for Biological Science and Chinese Biologists. The members of CBIS of course remember most fondly of Dr. Wu for establishing the CUSBIA program that brought more than four hundreds outstanding students from mainland China to top US Universities. Many of the students have now become international leaders of biomedical research and served as bridge for China to the outside world. The CUSBEA program also provided an opportunity for major US universities to realize the remarkable talent and diligence Chinese students, very positively influencing the policy and decision of subsequent recruitment of Chinese students for non-CUSBEA program.
