It was right after WWII, plastic was newly invented and introduced in China. I was a young teenager living in shanghai. Plastic was heralded as a miracle kind of glass (玻璃). Every thing was labelled with "glass or 玻璃" as an adjective . There were Miss 玻璃, 玻璃 stockings et al.
Gradually, we began to realize that plastic and glass are different. In particular plastic shed microplastic particles which are toxic to human health. Single use bottled water typically contain more lose microplastic particles than tap water. We are now advised not to drink bottled water. But in many underdeveloped countries where clean tap waters are not available, their use continues.
Anyway here is a list important (not all by far) DOs and DONTs for you personal health:
Do drink tap water rather than bottled water
Don't microwave food in plastic containers
Don't store food in plastic containers
as well as actions you can take to minimize the dangers of nano-plastic particles to our human civilization
Don't wash plastic containers in dishwasher. Hot water and heat discharge a lot of microplastic particles into the ground water (Earlier scientific studies grossly underestimated the amount of nano-plastic particles by 10 to 100 times).
Buy clothes made of natural material such as wool, cotton, et al and less made by synthetic material.
Do bring your own reusable bag to the grocery store. Help pass ordinance to prohibit supermarket from offering plastic bags
We can and should do all we can to help the human race to survive
