“的”和“the”有什么共性？（外一则）

 “的”是多音字，念de或di。作为结构助词，弱读，念de；作为其他成分，念di，如“的确”，“有的放矢”，等等。过去，凡是歌词中出现“的”，都要唱成di音，因为唱歌时的咬字一般都比平时说话要重些。自从流行歌手的地位窜升得一发不可收拾之后，规则改变了：几乎所有流行歌手都把歌词中所有“的”唱成了de，谁唱di就成了另类。但是，我是个古板的人，直到现在，哪位歌手坚持唱di这个音，我就认为她或他比较有素质。

“的”肯定是汉语中的最高频用词之一，the则是英语中最高频词用之一。the也是多音字，尽管英语中没有像我们这样的“多音字”的说法。它弱读时读［ðə］，重读时读［ði］，简直同汉语的读音规则一模一样啊！可见，东方西方，对于如何用发音来区分轻重，还是有些不约而同的做法的。

很多年前，一位美国朋友寄给我的信的信封上，除邮票之外贴了一则像是英语谚语的东西：

If I have a year to live,

Or just a day in which to give

A pleasant smile, a helping hand

A mind that tries to understand

这几句话的语法似乎不太通，但意思是明确的：

如果我只能再活一年，

甚至只能再活一天，

我要露出笑脸，伸出援手，

付出心思去认识万有。

有谁知道这句话的出处，是谚语吗？是名言吗？还是如Fortune Cookies（签语饼）中纸条上的内容一样，是被随意编造出来的东西？
