 Abstract 


背景回顾The formation of developmental boundaries is a common feature of multicellular plants and animals, and impacts the initiation, structure and function of all organs.


玉米叶Maize leaves comprise proximal sheath that encloses the stem, and a distal photosynthetic blade that projects away from the plant axis. An epidermally derived ligule and a joint‐like auricle develop at the blade/sheath boundary of maize leaves.


提出问题:Mutations disturbing the ligule/auricle region disrupt leaf patterning and impact plant architecture, yet it is unclear how this developmental boundary is established.


主要研究:Targeted microdissection followed by transcriptomic analyses of young leaf primordia were utilized to construct a co‐expression network associated with development of the blade/sheath boundary.


结果:Evidence is presented for proximodistal gradients of gene expression that establish a prepatterned transcriptomic boundary in young leaf primordia, before the morphological initiation of the blade/sheath boundary in older leaves.


结论:This work presents a conceptual model for spatiotemporal patterning of proximodistal leaf domains, and provides a rich resource of candidate gene interactions for future investigations of the mechanisms of blade/sheath boundary formation in maize.

发育边界的形成是多细胞植物和动物的常见特性,其影响着所有器官的起始、结构和功能。玉米的叶(leaf)由一个包裹着茎的近端叶鞘(sheath)和一个从植物轴伸出的远端光合叶片(blade)组成。在玉米的叶片和叶鞘边界出发育形成一个表皮衍生的叶舌(ligule)和一个关节状的叶耳(auricle)。对叶舌/叶耳区域的突变直接破坏了叶模式建成,并影响了植株的结构,然而还不清楚这种发育边界是如何建立起来的。本文中,作者通过对玉米幼嫩叶的靶向显微解剖,并结合转录组分析,构建了一个与叶片/叶鞘边界发育相关的共表达网络。证据表明,在老叶中观察到的叶片/叶鞘边界形态发生起始之前,幼嫩叶原基中的近端到远端的基因表达梯度已经建立起了一个预模式的转录边界。本文的工作提供了一个近-远端叶结构域时空模式建成的概念模型,同时为今后玉米叶片/叶鞘边界形成机制的研究提供了丰富的候选基因互作资源。
