Google Opens Massive Office in Canada

Beer and maple syrup must be the new milk and honey because yesterday Google unveiled its Kitchener-Waterloo office—considered one of its most significant hubs in Ontario's Tannery district, Toronto's The Globe and Mail reports. Replacing what was formerly termed an "outpost," the $30-million, 34,000-square-foot development project sprawls a couple miles —or a few kilometers—from Canada's engineering Mecca, the University of Waterloo.

During the event, which attracted three MPs, the entire Kitchener city council, and hoards of Google-eyed engineers, the search giant unveiled a primary colour…er, color-clad office, complete with pinball machines, in close proximity to other tech startups. In fact, just a floor below the headquarters is Communitech, a not-for-profit organization that offers support and office space to startups.

The biggest draw, however, is the University of Waterloo, a veritable Petri dish of engineering expertise. Research In Motion, the Canadian manufacturer of BlackBerry smartphones and the PlayBook tablet, has for some time tapped the trunk of U Waterlooo, using its neighboring office and donations to the university to lure in recent grads. （此处将uWaterloo比喻为枫树，从其吸引人才比喻为取糖浆）

"We have enormous respect for RIM… but there's room in this community for many different ways of innovating ," Steve Woods, head of the Kitchener Google office, told The Globe and Mail. "There's more than enough talent to go around."

To attract Waterloo students, Google announced a number of gifts to the University, including a million-dollar grant to the school's mathematics and computer- science departments to study how information and noise might be separated on social networks.

In addition to protecting its sacred cow —Web search—from the fragmentation of social networking sites such Facebook and Twitter, Google aims to use the Waterloo office to bolster new projects. For several years the "outpost" office has specialized in mobile tech, which, alongside the rapid rise of the Android platform, has grown central to the search giant's fortunes. Simultaneously, engineers in Kitchener-Waterloo are deeply involved in the development of Chrome, which started out as a Web browser but has since sprawled into a browser-based operating system.

For a look at the 170-member office—once described as "22 employees and 20 chairs" —take a look at the official job site. At last count, there are eight unfilled positions, so aspiring Googlers should ready their resumés... and possibly emphasize their hockey skills.
