We are seeking outstanding candidates (two senior and two junior postdoctoral research fellows) to undertake cutting-edge research on computational sustainability and environmental analysis funded by Campus Alberta Innovates Program (CAIP).

The postdocs will be a member of the CAIP Research Chair team at Athabasca University, Alberta, Canada. Athabasca University (AU) is an institution in one of Alberta's four Comprehensive Academic and Research Intensive institutions. AU is committed to engaging its researchers and the community-at-large in promoting the economic and environmental well-being ofthe land and water of northern communities and providing Basin-based knowledge that can contribute to improved decision-making and community stewardship.

The objective of the CAIP programis to use a multidisciplinary and multi-scale analysis by integrating modeling of biogeochemical and hydrological processes with GIS, remote sensing, computational technologies, andsocial science to identify and manipulate diverse data on ecological, environmental and climatic issues, to study environmental sustainability of integrated terrestrial and aquatic systems at ariver basin, to analyzes their impacts on the Athabasca River and its land forms, and link the outcomes within a decision framework.

Qualifications
The applicant for postdoctoral researchers should have:

·  A PhD or equivalent in ecosystem, environment, engineering, climatology or other closely related fields

·Expertise in ecosystem or environmental modelling is essential with good understanding of biogeochemical or hydrological processes.

· Strong skills and experiencewith programing languages (C, C++, or Fortran) and ability to design concept of model, algorithms and database

·        Good record of peer-reviewed scientific publication

·        Ability to work independently, self-motivated  and to efficiently deliver results on time

· The below experience and ability would be advantageous but not essential: ability to take initiative, prioritize and work under set deadlines and some experience in analyzing socio-economic data; ability to work as part of a team in a multi-disciplinary environment; data processing software (e.g. GIS, MATLAB, semantic technologies), scripting (e.g. C-shell), remote sensing and Unix/Linux environment; Experience running large scale models on computerclusters or supercomputers; Good verbal and written communication skills in English; experience in supervision of Master and PhD students.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in modeling of biogeochemical or hydrological processes, with experience in conducting model testing and coding. The four positions are fixed term positions for a period of 2 years for the first time and subject to review every six months with possible renewable on mutual agreement. The fellowship is valued at Canadian $35000 -  $50,000 per annum, depending on experience. This is an excellent opportunity for enthusiastic and ambitious researchers to use state-of-the-art approaches to make an impact in a fast-moving field of research.

Allqualified candidates are encouraged to apply; however, Canadians and permanent residents will be given priority. The Selection will begin consideration of applicants on December 31st 2013; the competition will remain open until suitable candidates are appointed. All the positions will be based on Edmonton campus.
