I agree what Prof Zare's view about H-Index if all other ways of assessment can be comparable. I never think any of the assessments such as H-Index, citations or IP can be subjective enough to reflect the academic levels of everybody. However, when you need a method, probably you have to choose a more subjective one. That's the point really. For those extremes, I never believe any of the assessments even peer review can be fair at least at some stages. For example, in Steven Weinberg's case, nobody or no system would identify him or recognize his work during years 1967, 1968 or even a bit later. So, what I mean is whatever system is just relatively better.
Dear Professor Wu/Dear Mr Wu:
I am very happy to meet you on this forum.if h-index is a very popular index of evaluating a scholar's level, but Baidu shows it can not be used in the Interdisciplinary study . so Iam confused .Could you please explain it ? Thank you very much

我的回复(2012-8-27 19:53):I am not quite clear what exactly you are referring as I haven't came across with Baidu's statement. I think H-index is a good reference to see how well the researchers are, but any such index or the way of assessment will inevitably have bias in one way or another. I too believe it's not useful to compare two scientists in quite distant areas using any indexes including H-index. Hope this answered your question.
