英语语词science有泛指和特指两个涵义

查《Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary of Current English》，英语语词science的涵义：knowledge arranged in an orderly manner, especially, knowledge obtained by observation and testing of facts.

可见，英语语词science有泛指和特指两个涵义之分，泛指的有“分门别类的有系统的知识”（《新华字典》）之意，相当于汉语的“学”（但国人不喜欢使用单字词）、“学问”等。特指的science才能译为“科学”。

在汉语中，“学”是属（大类）概念，“科学”是种（小类）概念，所有的科学都是学，有的学是科学，并非所有的学都是科学。学概念的外延减去科学概念的外延，剩下的是非科学概念的外延，可用下列欧拉图表示，这是逻辑学有关概念的基本知识：

并非所有的学都是科学。所以，我们在翻译science一词时并不能不加区分地笼统地翻译为科学。例如，“political science”不宜直接翻译为“政治科学”，“formal science”不宜直接翻译为“形式科学”。

如何翻译“science”一词，就要求我们仔细区分科学和非科学，把非科学的学也称为科学，易造成混淆。

如何区分科学和非科学呢？这就得从“science”一词的特指涵义着手。

“testing of facts”，指科学是可重复的，可验证的知识。

社会现象是不可重复的，不可验证的。经济学是关于社会经济现象的，是不可重复验证的，所以是非科学，不必称之为“经济科学”。这里的“非科学”的意思是“不是科学”，并无“不正确，无价值”之义，不能把“非科学”、“不是科学”理解为“不正确，无价值”。非科学的经济学就称经济学，没有必要称为经济科学，经济学家倒十分实在，不称经济学为经济科学。哲学，数学也不是科学。当然，科学也不是数学，不是哲学。不同的事物之间可以存在关系，例如，哲学指导科学，数学是科学的基础。中医学喜欢称中医学为科学，如中国中医科学院，但传统医学不是科学，中国传统医学是传统医学。非哲学的学自诩哲学，是为伪哲学，同样，非科学的学科学，是为伪科学。

有的时候，学者在无意中使用科学一词指称非科学的学，例如，在指称“心理学”的时候用“心理学”一词，而指称“认知学”的时候使用“认知科学”一词。

并非所有的实验都是科学实验。经验不是科学实验。有的人以为只要做了实验就是科学的，并不讲究如何控制实验因素，能否确定因果关系。只有按照科学实验原则、科学实验方法进行的实验才是科学实验。

传统逻辑学已经提供了科学实验原则、科学实验方法。
