Harvard 358^th commencement

这几天哈佛校园里很热闹，到处可见临时帐篷和挂着各种牌子的人。每年都约有32000人参加毕业典礼，毕业学生及学生的家长都是被邀请之列。主要活动从6月2号开始到6月4号下午结束，当然高潮是6月4号的庆典。

由于只有毕业生及其家长才有票，所以我们只能站在外面看看。

哈佛校长Drew Faust在6月2号的class day 诠释了哈佛的精神：

“We have insisted that the best education is the one that cultivates habits of mind, an analytic spirit, a capacity to judge and question that will equip you to adapt to any circumstance or take any vocational direction”

哈佛大学工程和应用科学学院（School of Engineering and Applied Sciences (SEAS)）有90名本科生（undergrads）和 80名研究生（ grad students）毕业。

国内的高校特别是冲击世界一流高校的学校的毕业比例好像也基本上达到了本科生和研究生1：1的水平。

有意思的是有8个毕业生成为军人（5个陆军，3个海军，这些人被Faust校长称为Soldier-Scholar），Gen. David H. Petraeus, commander of U.S. Central Command, re-administered the oath of office for what he said “must be the smartest new officers in our military.” 学校送给这些新军官的礼物是一本书：gave a gift-wrapped book — a copy of “Just and Unjust Wars: A Moral Argument with Historical Illustrations” (1977), by political philosopher Michael Walzer, then a professor of government at Harvard.
