“
Genius is one percent inspiration, ninety-nine percent perspiration.
Spoken statement (c. 1903); published in Harper's Monthly (September 1932)
Variants:
None of my inventions came by accident. I see a worthwhile need to be met and I make trial after trial until it comes. What it boils down to is one per cent inspiration and ninety-nine per cent perspiration.
Statement in a press conference (1929), as quoted in Uncommon Friends: Life with Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Harvey Firestone, Alexis Carrel & Charles Lindbergh (1987) by James D. Newton, p. 24.
Variant forms without early citation: "Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine per cent perspiration. Accordingly, a 'genius' is often merely a talented person who has done all of his or her homework."
"Genius: one percent inspiration and 99 percent perspiration."
”
1)通过一本后人写的书《Edison: Inventing the Century》(作者: Neil Baldwin),在这本书的注释第296条(链接),提到了1932年9月的《Edison in his laboratory》。
“
5. You may have heard people repeat what I have said, "Genius is one percent inspiration, ninety-nine percent perspiration." Yes, sir, it's mostly hard work.
THOMAS ALVA EDISON (inventor, 1847-1931), remark to M. A. Rosanoff, "Edison in His Laboratory,"Harper's, September 1932
”
仔细读这段话,可以得出几点推测:首先,M•A•Rosanoff所引用的那次声明(1903年)并非是爱迪生首次这么说;其次,在此之前,爱迪生的这句话应该也已经传出,或者说可能被别人引用过,因为他说“你(你们)可能已经听到人们重复我所说过的。。。。。。”;
(Yes, sir, it's mostly hard work. )
“None of my inventions came by accident. I see a worthwhile need to be met and I make trial after trial until it comes. What it boils down to is one per cent inspiration and ninety-nine per cent perspiration.”
我们再来看这段文字的出处,1987年James D. Newton先生所写的一篇名为《Uncommon Friends: Life with Thomas Edison, Henry Ford, Harvey Firestone, Alexis Carrel & Charles Lindbergh 》的书。
“
Variant forms without early citation: "Genius is one percent inspiration and ninety-nine per cent perspiration. Accordingly, a 'genius' is often merely a talented person who has done all of his or her homework."
”
“Thomas Edison said “Genius is one per cent inspiration and ninety-nine per cent
perspiration.”
Without the one percent of inspiration, all the perspiration in the world is only
a bucket of sweat. So where do writer s find that all-important inspiration?
An informal poll revealed the following sources:……(下略)”
“
Edison Papers editors recently discovered a fragment penned by Edison in 1915 in which he placed doubt upon his own famous quote:
"[T]hey attribute this saying to me,” he wrote, “but I did not cannot remember that I ever said it."
”
“If Edison had a needle to find in a haystack, he would proceed at once with the diligence of the bee to examine straw after straw until he found the object of his search. ... I was a sorry witness of such doings, knowing that a little theory and calculation would have saved him ninety per cent of his labor.
New York Times (19 October 1931)
”
