AGENCY: National Science Foundation (NSF)/ Directorate for Geosciences (GEO)/ Division of Earth Sciences (EAR)

PROGRAM: Geophysics

OBJECTIVES: This program provides funding for basic research in the physics of the solid earth to explore its composition, structure, and processes. Topics include seismicity, seismic wave propagation, and the nature and occurrence of earthquakes; the earth's magnetic, gravity, and electrical fields; the earth's thermal structure; and geodynamics. Supported research also includes geophysical studies of active deformation, including geodesy, and studies of the properties and behavior of earth materials in support of geophysical observation and theory. Geophysics is especially interested in proposals in emerging fields.

As part of the NSF’s contribution to the National Earthquake Hazard Reduction Program (NEHRP), the Geophysics Program is interested in research proposals directed toward the fundamental understanding of earthquake processes.

SUBMISSION WINDOWS: May 5, 2009 - June 5, 2009 and November 8, 2009 – December 8, 2009

FUNDING INFORMATION: NSF anticipates providing is $14.6 million annually to support 70-80 standard or continuing grants per year.

Estimated program budget, number of awards and average award size/duration are subject to the availability of funds.
