DVD Multi drive firmware update utility (Bootable CD ISO) - ThinkPad
|
|
Create a bootable CD with this ISO image using CD recording software such as Record Now! This CD-R or CD-RW utility, on the bootable CD, will examine your system configuration and detect a DVD Multi drive installed in your ThinkPad. It will then check the firmware revision of the drive and judge whether your system requires a firmware update or not. If required, it will prompt you to run the appropriate firmware update program for your drive.
This firmware update is supported on the follow ThinkPad systems:
- R50, R50p, R51, R52 - T40, T40p, T41, T41p, T42, T42p - T60, T60p, T61, T61p - X40, X41 - X60, X61 - Z60t, Z61t
Note: - This program is language independent and can be used with any language system. |

Notes:
- The update utility will not find an DVD Multi Drive in a Docking Station. In this case, remove the drive and install it into an Ultrabay in your ThinkPad. If you encounter a problem installing an DVD Multi Drive into your ThinkPad, call your local Support Center.
- The utility contains several executable files, but DO NOT RUN THESE PROGRAMS. Running these programs manually could ruin your drive.
- After updating the firmware, you may need to reboot Windows XP an additional time. This is a required action for Windows to populate the registry.
- The DVD Multi Drive Firmware Update Utility does not support a suspend/hibernation/resume feature of the ThinkPad while the firmware update utility is running. Do not use Fn + F4 or equivalent functions.
This section provides instructions using the RecordNow! program to make a bootable CD. Refer to your other product manuals when using other CD writing programs.
- Make sure you have a ThinkPad with a CDRW, DVD/CDRW combo or Multi drive installed. Insert a blank CD-R or CDRW disc.
- Download the FWDM11.iso file.
- Run RecordNow!.
- Click the Backup Projects tab.
- Click Burn Image. Follow the instructions
- Choose the downloaded ISO file in step 1 of this process to create your CD.
The resulting CD-R or CDRW disc includes an operating system and is bootable on the supported ThinkPad models. Note: The DVD Multi Drive Firmware Update Utility bootable CD does not support USB Optical Disc Drives, PCMCIA/CardBus Optical Disc Drives, Optical Disc Drives in a Docking Station bay, or any drive other than the DVD Multi Drive in the ThinkPad Ultrabay. Other drives will not be updated correctly by this firmware update utility.
Confirm that an DVD Multi Drive is in the boot device list, by entering your BIOS setup, depending on model:
- Power on the ThinkPad.
- Press the F1 key/ blue Access IBM button / blue ThinkVantage button to enter the BIOS Setup Utility when the ThinkPad logo is seen on the screen.
- Choose Startup from the menu
- Choose Boot from the menu.
Note: Write down the current boot priority order for restoration later if you need to modify your boot list.
- In the Boot Priority Order, set ATAPI CD0 to the top of the list.
- Press F10 to save the new setup.
- Power off or restart the system..
After the above sections "Making a CD-R or CDRW disc to use" and "Prepare the boot device" have been completed, follow these steps. Connect the AC adapter and use a fully charged battery to power the ThinkPad system during the update. This will avoid an accidental loss of power. Note: Install only one DVD Multi Drive into your ThinkPad.
- Place the CD-R or CDRW disc you created in Making a CD-R or CDRW disc to use section into your ThinkPad DVD Multi Drive.
- Boot the system with the Firmware Update Utility.
- Drives that have been detected will be listed in the upper area of the main menu. If a drive that requires an update is detected, it will be shown with a blinking mark on the left. If you find no blinking mark, your DVD Multi Drive has the latest firmware and there is no need to update or the update firmware is not valid for your drive. Remove the Firmware Update Utility and shutdown your ThinkPad.
- Follow the instructions on the screen to update the necessary drives.
- When the installation is complete, remove the Firmware Update Utility CD or CDRW from the DVD Multi Drive and power off your ThinkPad system. Do not restart the ThinkPad system with the Ctrl-Alt-Delete keys.
- Enter BIOS Setup Utility again, if you need to restore your original boot order.
Attention Do not power off the ThinkPad during the firmware update, or your DVD Multi Drive may NOT be usable anymore.
