Head of Department of Cell Biology, Yale University

James E. Rothman, Head of Department of Cell Biology, Yale University, in memory of Ferguson F Wallace Professor of Biomedicine. He has won many honors, including the Louisa Gross Horvitz Prize of Columbia University, the Lasker Prize for Basic Medicine (2002), and the King Faisal Prize. He received a master's degree from Yale University and a doctor's degree from Harvard. He won the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 2013.

Abstract

Cells contain small membrane-enclosed vesicles which transport many kinds of cargo between the compartments of the cell. The result is a choreographed program of secretory, biosynthetic, and endocytic protein traffic that serves the cell's internal physiologic needs.
