穿过地铁站,看见四川音乐学院的英文名称是Sichuan Conservatory of Music,有点儿好奇,原以为学院不就是institution或academy或college么?
据牛津词典的解释,十七世纪的Conservatory是保育院之类的机构(保留了conserve-的基本意思),A hospital for the protection and nurture of orphans and foundlings. 如A Conservatory for poor Maidens,The Monasteries…with a Conservatory of Orphans. 其中当然有音乐教育。后来衍生出conservatorio,就是音乐学院了(A public institution forspecial instruction in music and declamation),conservatory是美国写法,英国人喜欢用法文形式conservatoire。意大利的conservatorios最早,就是从孤儿院来的(originated in hospitals for the rearing of foundlings and orphans, in which a musical education was given)。
现代医学也讲音乐疗效,但不知哪家医院有音乐疗法和音乐病房。前些年见过系列的“莫扎特效应”,有书有音乐,我竟然也在旧书摊收过一本新书叫The Mozart Effect: Tapping the Power of Music to Heal the Body, Stregthen the Mind, and Unlock the Creative Spirit。爱因斯坦喜欢莫扎特,可以用来做广告。
《乐记》说,魏文侯听“古乐”就想睡觉,而听“郑卫之音”则不知疲倦。古乐新乐差距咋那么大呢?子夏同学告诉他,古乐是德音,“德音之谓乐”,而新乐是“溺音”,“淫于色而害于德”。今天不好说流行音乐是“溺音”,但我们至少应该经历一些古典音乐的激荡。
刚才看到一部新书稿,作者是做天体物理的,也是某交响乐团的科学顾问——yes, there is such a thing——乐团请他来勾连科学与音乐。他还参与创作了“哈勃大合唱”(Hubble Cantata)。作者讲这个小故事是为了引出一个问题:什么是好奇?激发好奇也许是音乐的神奇效应之一。没有好奇心的人可以多听大补。
