1925年，位于马里兰州的约翰·霍普金斯大学（The Johns Hopkins University—JHU, Baltimore, Maryland）医学院教授Florence Rena Sabin（1871--1953）当选为美国科学院院士。Florence R. Sablin成为美国科学院自1863年成立以来的第1位女院士。

   Florence R. Sablin主要致力于淋巴系统等研究。1893年，毕业于位于马萨诸塞州著名的女子文理学院----Smith College (Northampton, MA)。该学院由Sophia Smith (1796--1870)创办于1870年。这是作者所访问的第1所美国女子文理学院，我对该学院的科学图书馆印象非常深刻。

   1895—1896年，Florence R. Sablin曾在Smith College动物系任教。

   1896年，Florence R. Sablin入学约翰·霍普金斯大学医学院，1900年毕业。

   1902年，Florence R. Sablin成为约翰·霍普金斯大学医学院首位女性medical faculty成员；1917年，成为该医学院首位女性正教授(full professor of histology)。1938年退休。
