The Chinese have used a method called acupuncture (针灸) to perform operations for about 4,000 years without putting the patient to sleep. This involves placing flexible needles into certain parts of the body. The needles are available in a number of stores in China and anyone may buy them.
To learn how to use the needles takes about one month of training. But to be skillful requires greater time. The person who performs the acupuncture knows how to put in the needles so the needles themselves are painful. This person also knows where to place the needles so the patient feels no pain in the area where the operation is to be performed. A particular operation might require 25 or more needles placed in various parts of the body. But now this operation requires only 3 or 4 needles.
Today, the Chinese doctors are trying to learn more about acupuncture. They are trying to develop a convincing theory to explain how the needles work in preventing pain, or why a needle in the wrist, for example, would prevent the pain in the area of the mouth.
A patient who needs an operation is given a choice between having acupuncture or having one of the chemicals used for putting him to sleep. It has been estimated that over half of the patients choose acupuncture because there is no sickness after the operation because the chemical may make the patient sick for a few hours a day.
16. Acupuncture can be defined as _____.
A.a medical technique
B.a medical needle
C.a medical operation
D.a medical machine
17. All the statements are true about the performer of acupuncture EXCEPT ____?

18. To learn how to use the needles, it takes a person _____.
A. around one month
B.a couple of days C. a life time
D.several hours
19. It can be learned from the passage that _____.
A. more patients prefer chemicals to acupuncture
B.an operation in the past needs more needles than now
C.acupuncture has existed in China for as long as 6,000 years
D.Chinese doctors have developed a convincing theory about acupuncture.
20. Which is implied but not stated in the passage?
A.The Chinese mainly use acupuncture to cure strange disease.
B.Most Chinese patients prefer acupuncture to chemicals in curing diseases.
C.The Chinese have spread acupuncture all over the world.

Passage two
It is quite clear that sleeping is necessary to everyone. If we don’t get a enough sleep, we will
feel tired.
Gen er a lly, we have two kinds of sleep: active sleep and passive sleep. The passive sleep gives us the rest our bodies need, and prepare us for active sleep, in which dreaming appears. In passive sleep, the body is at relaxation. The heart slows down. We move little. And the brain becomes very inactive. If a person continues to sleep, the brain temperature rises, the amount of blood in the brain increases, the body becomes very, very still, and the brain goes from being inactive to being active. And as the brain becomes more active the eyes begin to move rapidly. When the eyes begin to move, this is a sign of another change – the change is that the person is dreaming.
Throughout the night a person usually dreams for about one and a half hours. Many people say that they don’t dream or that they rarely dream. Doctors have studied the sleep and have found that everyone dreams – in fact, every person needs to dream in order to keep healthy. It appears that we need passive sleep in order to rest our bodies and need active sleep in order to rest our brains.
21. Sleep is necessary to everyone because ____.
A. it is of great importance to our minds
B. it is of great importance to our health
C. our bodies need it
D. our brains cannot work without it
22. According to the passage, we know that dreaming appears in____.
A. our active sleep
B. our inactive sleep
C. our passive sleep
D. our health sleep
23. The eyes will not move and be still when a person sleeps unless______.
A. he is forced to open his eyes
B. he is blind in one eye
D. he is disturbed by others
24. Which of the following statements is TRUE about the state of passive sleep.
A. His body moves a little and his brain becomes active
B. His heart beats slowly but his body moves a lot
C. His brain becomes inactive and his heart beats fast
D. His heart beats slowly and his brain becomes very calm.
25. It can be inferred form the passage that ______.
A. both active sleep and passive sleep are important to our health
B. those people who dream a lot in their sleep can never keep healthy
C. a person needs only one and a half hours’ sleep everyday
D. only passive sleep is necessary to everyone of us
