The group of Soil and Environmental Terrestrial Physics (STEP) (http://www.step.ethz.ch/), a research group of the Department of Environmental Sciences (D-UWIS) at ETH Zurich, Switzerland, invites applications for a
PhD student position focusing on
Effects of fluid and material interfaces on flow and transport in porous media: Interfaces play a dominant role in water flow and distribution in soils and porous media in general. Evaporation and infiltration are marked by emergence of displacement fronts (fluid interfaces) with complex shapes and roughness, inducing heterogeneities in liquid phase distribution within the porous systems. Front dynamics are difficult to measure and to predict. Additional types of interfaces occur in layered media or in other forms of sharp textural and wettability contrasts that shape many flow and transport processes in ways not predicted by present continuum theories. Such material interfaces may induce unstable fronts, and lead to preferential water and air flow. To better understand the role and dynamics of interfaces, pore scale models and advanced imaging methods (high speed camera, X-ray, neutron tomography) would be applied.
The candidate will interact with an international research team focusing on interfacial flow and transport processes in porous media (motion of interfaces and flow across interfaces).
We are looking for exceptional candidates that completed Master's degree from an accredited university in the areas physics, engineering or environmental sciences (exceptional students without a Masters degree will be considered as well). The successful candidate would be expected to assist with teaching and other activities of the lab.
The application should include a CV, a motivation letter and 2 reference names. For further information please contact Dr. Peter Lehmann, peter.lehmann@env.ethz.ch <mailto:peter.lehmann@env.ethz.ch>
