• I have lived the American Dream since coming to the USA as a teenager alone in 1950
• I am interested in helping others to do the same which is why I write a blog since 2007 about my life experience and general advice on life and career that I find useful in my own life. These blog articles have been very popular. My website had over 10 million visitors from 70 different countries with many feedbacks.
• However, still I receive many private e-mails from readers all over the world wanting:
o Answers to open ended questions such as how does one learn about decision and control theory or what should one study to become an expert
o Engage in one-on-one private extensive discussion on our profession and advice on your specific career
o I still try to answer very specific questions if I can do so faithfully and accurately in a short e-mail answer. Otherwise see my next point below.
• The basic problems with this type of requests are:
o There are too many such requests from all over the world. Even in my retired life I cannot possibly be a private consultant to anyone who asked me
o Free advices are usually worth the same. There are no easy learning pills: guidance can help avoid blind alleys but you still have to do the work to gain real insights
o This is why I write my blogs for the past 18 years. But you must spend the effort to read them and gleam what/which can be useful
• To become an expert in anything is not easy. There are no easy learning pills to take or shortcut to fame and fortune. Otherwise, everyone will be able to achieve them by wishing and the stuff you desire won’t be considered as “fame and fortune” anymore.
• If your life is 80% perfect you still need the other 20% to keep you in perspective
• The 80-20 principle (read my blog on the subject. Spend a little effort to search for it.)
• TIME is a equal treatment partner. No matter who you are in this world, you have only got 24 hours a day. One has to spent part of these hours to eat, rest, sleep, and do daily chores. Time of reflection and to help other, s are limited Thus, if you can get someone I know that I respect and trust to recommend you as someone I should spend my limited time with, then you will definitely have my attention.
Thus, I hope you understand my limitations. When I help I want to avoid platitudes, incomplete or misleading advice, and be genuinely useful to the receipinets. This is not easy given the constraints. There are no free lunches in the world for both the giver and the recipints.
