Teaching Translation to Non-translators
Increasingly, everyday people are intersecting with translation in different areas of their lives (e.g. using an automatic translation tool like Google Translate, visiting a multilingual website, watching a film with subtitles, or interpreting for a friend or family member). Nevertheless, translation remains a misunderstood field for the general public. How can we educate people outside the language professions so that they will gain a deeper understanding of and appreciation for what is involved in translation in order to become more informed users of translated products and stronger allies who can offer meaningful support in multilingual and multicultural contexts? We will consider what content is meaningful in a course on translator for non-translators and discuss how such a course could be taught.
