评审委员介绍，赫克1972年率先发现，借助钯催化，不用高温和高压，碳原子间可以相互接近至可以发生反应的距离；根岸1977年和铃木1979年对这一理论作出补充，把研究范围扩大到更多有机分子。赫克、根岸和铃木现年分别79岁、75岁和80岁，虽然因同一课题获同一奖项，却不曾共事或合作。碳原子是生命重要组成部分，涉及这一元素的有机化学因而对解释自然现象、改善民众生活至关重要。
Richard F. Heck，美国公民。1931年出生于美国斯普林菲尔德（Springfield）。1954年从美国加州大学洛杉矶分校获得博士学位。现为美国特拉华大学名誉退休教授。Heck反应（图1）指卤代芳烃、苯甲酰氯或芳基重氮盐等与乙烯基化合物的C-C偶联反应，是合成C-C键的有效方法之一。该反应是由美国特拉华大学著名学者Richard F.Heck教授上世纪70年代初发现的，由于该反应在肉桂酸酯类衍生物、某些医药中间体的合成中有着广泛的应用，受到了人们的极大关注.
