1 substitution of non-existent sounds

Some sounds do not exist in standard Chinese. Consequently, many Chinese speakers of English have difficulty with “th”, ”v” and “l” sounds in words such as:

think together them

love twelve

well twelfth twelve

2. problems with pronouncing consonant sequences

Chinese does not have consonants articulated in succession, eg :[gl] [gr] [dr] ect, therefore many Chinese learners of English tend to insert a ‘vowel’ between consonants in words such as:

glad

draw

interesting

pray

3. Vibration at the end of an English word (or adding a vowel sound at the end of a word which should not be there)

Since most Chinese words end a vowel sound, Chinese student tend to make their vocal cord vibrate at the end of word, so [I] etc can be heard. They conform to the typical Chinese CV syllable structure. Consequently, with words which end with ‘s’ ‘sh’, ‘ve’ ‘t’, ‘k’, ‘d’, or ‘pe’, a vowel sound is often heard at the end of the word which should not be there., such as with:

Sometimes

Wish

Improve

But

Work

College

And

Hope

4. Omitting the sound

Chinese learner often omit [n], [m], [l], [r] when they are after the vowel or at the end of syllables. In words such as:

Mainly

Mine

Almost

Are

Hard

People

5 easily confused consonants 

Voiced and voiceless consonants are confused, such as [b]-[p], [t]-[d], [k]-[g], [t]-[d], [T]-[s], [d]-[z], etc as with the word “the”
