For what one works and lives? This seems to be a permanent topic for all of us.But so far I haven't found any definite answer to it. Or, there is in fact no answer at all ?
Some one might say:" I work for money and live for myself ". Is this right or wrong? who knows? And no one could tell. Some one might say:"I work for the interests of other people( or some other holy goals) and live for the society". Is this right or wrong ? Who knows? And no one could tell.
There are some people who might say:" money is not all that will bring happiness to you" or "we don't want be the slaves of money",while others who might say:"money is everything, without which we cannot move even a small step in this world" or "money is a pair of shackles binding up the free will of our heart". Can you judge which is right or wrong? No one could tell. Yes,no one could tell which view speaks more, and there is also no need to say so
Then, you may ask what my opinion is regarding this.My answer is:to think carefully and then know clearly what you really want before you come to any conclusion. Now,let me put it in more details.
Different people have different ideas about life, different outlooks on the world, different principles to follow as to how to behave themselves and different believes in how to be a man in the society.Yet,only few people can strictly adhere to their believes and principles throughout life with the slightest move. And for most of people around us they have to make changes or deviations very often, thus adapting themselves to new environments, sometimes, even reconciling themselves with something contrary to their judgment of right and wrong, such as dishonesty, unjustness, mercilessness and etc,in a word, yielding to the dark and ugly. Why? Because, they, who are not strong enough, have to yield to the evil to survive.
We are not saint like Jesus Christ and his twelve disciples or Sakyamuni and his four followers. We are ordinary people, plain and humble. So we ought to understand those guys who have to give up when facing up severe conditions, and also those who sometimes have to fight through vulgar means for money and social positions. Indeed,we ought not to blame them for what they do. Of course,he who sacrifices the interests of other people for his own is not allowed and should be condemned.
There is one thing that I'd like to make clear: in most cases "you cannot eat your cake and have it" as a similar Chinese saying goes:"you can't have both the fish and bear's paw simutaneously." Therefore, one has to make choice among all benefit that he could get. As for your classmate he chose to leave rather than to stay with a boss whose concept of running the firm he was unable to accept. He got his mind released by giving up a job of high pay. That's what he gained and also what he forwent.
All of us must learn how to give up something for something else.In our life we might have many occasions to make choice in front of opportunities. What comes first,in my opinion, is to know how to give up,not how to secure. I must admit that this is a very difficult thing which requires us to weigh and balance the costs we'll have to pay and benefit we'll get before making any decision.Yet,this is the life, our real life,no matter whether we like it or not.
Many people think wisdom lies in how to get what we want, whereas my view of it is that great wisdom lies in how to give up what we desire.
