Walen Chapter Two: “Where I Lived, and What I Lived For”

Section 1: Arrival at Walden Pond (Abridged)

Commentary

Thoreau’s journey into the woods is not merely geographic—it is symbolic. In this opening movement, he describes the land he surveyed and the cabin he built, but beneath the surface lies a deeper migration: from society to solitude, from noise to stillness, from inherited life to chosen life. The forest becomes a threshold, and the pond a mirror.

I considered many places before settling at Walden Pond. I walked the woods, surveyed the land, and imagined what it would be like to live among the pines and the silence. I dreamed of buying a farm, not for profit, but for peace. Yet I found that ownership was not necessary—only presence.

At last, I chose a spot by the pond, where the water was clear and the woods deep. I built my cabin on the edge of the shore, among the pitch pines and huckleberry bushes. It was a place where I could see the seasons change, hear the wind speak, and live without interruption.

I did not go far from town, but I went far from its habits. I was still within earshot of the train, but no longer its passenger. I lived close to nature, and closer to myself. The pond was my companion, the woods my shelter, the sky my ceiling.

I did not seek isolation, but clarity. I wished to live where the world did not crowd me, where I could hear my own thoughts before they were drowned by others. In choosing this place, I chose a life.

Quote of this Section:

“I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately.”
