📘《Walden》Chapter 1: “Economy”

Section 1: Why I Begin with Economy (Abridged)

Commentary: Thoreau opens not with lofty abstractions, but with the ground beneath our feet. He insists that philosophy must begin with how we live—how we eat, sleep, work, and clothe ourselves. This section is a declaration of method: experience over theory, simplicity over speculation. It sets the tone for the entire book—a life examined through its most basic acts.

When I wrote the following pages, I lived alone in the woods, a mile from any neighbor, in a house I built myself, earning my living by the labor of my hands. I lived there for two years and two months. I now reside again among the civilized, but I have not forgotten the lessons of solitude.

I do not propose to write an ode to dejection, but to speak plainly about the life I led and the thoughts it stirred. I wish to tell what I lived for, and how I lived, not to boast, but to offer a sincere account. I begin with economy because it is the foundation of living—how we earn, spend, and sustain ourselves.

Most men are so occupied with the superficial concerns of life—property, reputation, fashion—that they never truly live. They inherit habits and debts, and work themselves into graves without ever asking whether their labor serves their soul.

I have seen that the cost of a thing is measured not in coin, but in the time and life exchanged for it. I sought to reduce my wants so that I might live more freely. I built my own shelter, grew my own food, and found that simplicity is not poverty, but liberation.

I do not write for those who are content, but for those who feel the stirrings of discontent and dare to ask: Is this life truly mine? Let us not be deceived by appearances or tradition. Let us examine the foundations of our existence.

I ask not what others have said, but what I have learned. I speak from experience, not hearsay. If my words seem strange, it is because truth often sounds unfamiliar to ears dulled by habit.

Let us begin, then, with the ground beneath our feet—with food, shelter, clothing, and fuel. Let us begin with economy.

🪞Reflective Quote

“I wished to live deliberately, to front only the essential facts of life.”

This iconic line from Walden distills the spirit of Section 1: a call to conscious, intentional living, stripped of illusion.
