检索基本科学指标（Essential Science Indicators，简称ESI）得知1998年1月1日至2008年12月31日进入ESI的SCI、SSCI收录的材料科学领域期刊有185种，11年材料科学领域论文总被引次数、论文数、篇均被引次数排名均为美国第一位，论文数74,191篇、总被引739,145次、篇均被引9.96次；中国材料科学论文的总被引次数258,857次排名在第3位、论文数70,353篇排名在第2位、篇均被引次数3.68未进前20名，中国台湾地区论文的总被引次数57,991次排名在第12位、论文数10,923篇排名在第12位、篇均被引次数5.31未进前20名，其中中国作者（至少有一位中国作者，不包括中国台湾地区）有456篇材料科学领域高被引论文进入ESI。

这456篇材料科学领域高被引论文通讯作者为中国学者总被引次数超过200次的有15篇论文，其中被引用最多的论文为和新加坡合作的国际合作论文（被引698次）。

需要说明的是某个国家论文数和引文数统计的根据是在发表的论文中出现的研究机构，如果一篇论文中署有至少一个国家的地址那么此论文就归属于该国家；论文中列出的所有国家都要考虑在内，而不只是考虑列在首位的国家；如果一个国家在该篇论文中出现多次，则按一次计算，所有在论文中出现的国家的引文数就是指该论文的引文数。

下面为检索1998-2009年Web of Science分析得到至少有一位中国作者（不包括台湾）的材料科学领域中通讯作者为中国作者总被引次数超过200次的15篇论文，这15篇论文分别刊登在8种期刊上，其中MATERIALS SCIENCE & ENGINEERING R-REPORTS《材料科学与工程，R辑：报告》4篇、CHEMISTRY OF MATERIALS《材料的化学性质》4篇、ADVANCED MATERIALS《先进材料》2篇、SCIENCE《科学》1篇、COMPOSITES SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY《复合材料科学与技术》1篇、MATERIALS SCIENCE AND ENGINEERING A-STRUCTURAL MATERIALS PROPERTIES MICROSTRUCTURE AND PROCESSING《材料科学与工程，A辑：结构材料的微观结构与加工性能》1篇、COMPOSITES PART B-ENGINEERING《复合材料B辑:工程》1篇、ACTA MATERIALIA《材料学报》1篇，第1、3、4、11、14篇为综述论文。

   15篇材料科学领域高被引论文通讯作者单位为香港城市大学5篇、中国科学院3篇、清华大学、北京大学、复旦大学、同济大学、中国科技大学、香港中文大学、香港理工大学各1篇。
