检索Essential Science Indicators（基本科学指标）得知1998年1月1日至2008年12月31日SCI、SSCI收录的社会科学（总论）期刊有736种，11年社会科学（总论）领域论文总被引次数、论文数排名均美国第一位，论文数197,423篇、总被引1,053,303次、篇均被引5.34次；中国论文总被引次数、论文数排名在第10位、篇均被引次数未进前20名，论文数5,545篇、总被引17,986次、篇均被引3.24次，其中有89篇论文被高被引。

需要说明的是某个国家论文数和引文数统计的根据是在发表的论文中出现的研究机构，如果一篇论文中署有至少一个国家的地址那么此论文就归属于该国家；论文中列出的所有国家都要考虑在内，而不只是考虑列在首位的国家；如果一个国家在该篇论文中出现多次，则按一次计算，所有在论文中出现的国家的引文数就是指该论文的引文数。

这89篇社会科学（总论）领域被引论文，引用最多的论文为非第一作者单位的国际合作论文（被引100次），第3、4、5、6、7篇高被引论文均为非第一作者单位和美国合作的论文。据统计，美国是中国高被引论文的主要合作者，有美国参与的高被引论文的相对值大约是中国高被引论文相对值的5倍。

下面为检索1998-2009年Web of Science分析得到89篇至少有一位中国作者（不包括台湾）的社会科学（总论）领域中通讯作者为中国的8篇被引论文，这8篇论文分别刊登在8种期刊上，其中URBAN STUDIES《城市研究》1篇、RESEARCH ON SOCIAL WORK PRACTICE《社会工作实践研究》1篇、CHINESE SCIENCE BULLETIN《科学通报》1篇、AIDS PATIENT CARE AND STDS《艾滋病患者医疗与性传播疾病》1篇、SOCIAL SCIENCE & MEDICINE《社会科学与医学》1篇、BMC PUBLIC HEALTH《BMC公共卫生》1篇、URBAN GEOGRAPHY《城市地理学》1篇、EURASIAN GEOGRAPHY AND ECONOMICS《欧亚地理学与经济学》1篇，第1、7篇为会议论文。
