Colors are available for 18 clusters. The remaining clusters are colored grey.

- Colors used in the overlay and density visualizations have been revised. The overlay and density visualizations now provide multiple color schemes. These are modified versions of color schemes obtained from Python's Matplotlib library (https://matplotlib.org/users/colormaps.html). The viridis color scheme is used as the default scheme.

  - When creating a citation or bibliographic coupling map of documents, the label of a document includes a letter after the publication year if there are multiple documents that have the same first author and the same publication year (e.g., 'Smith (2015a)' and 'Smith (2015b)').

  - When creating a map based on bibliographic data, documents without authors are handled in a consistent way for all file types.

  - Warning message is shown when creating a co-citation map of cited authors based on Web of Science files. Only first authors are included.

  - Warning message is shown when creating a co-citation map of cited references or cited sources based on Scopus files. The data quality may be insufficient.

- Visualizations have been improved. In particular, improvements have been made to mouseover effects.

- Some minor improvements to the screenshots have been made.

- Lines text box in the options panel has been replaced by Min. strength and Max. lines text boxes. Default value for the maximum number of lines that are displayed has been set to 500.

- Availability of fonts in the Font drop down list in the options panel has been made dependent on the use of CJKV (Chinese, Japanese, Korean, and Vietnamese) characters in the labels of items. When the labels of items include CJKV characters, only the SansSerif font is available.

- A number of changes have been made to the way in which encodings of text files are handled:

  - Functionality for detecting the encoding of a text file has been improved using the juniversalchardet library.

  - Encoding that is used when writing item labels to a text file has been made dependent on encoding that was detected when the item labels were read from a text file.

  - When data is written to a text file using the UTF-8 encoding, a BOM (byte order mark) is added.

- Code for writing GML files has been revised in order to make sure that GML files can be read by Gephi.

- Command line parameters 'min_line_strength', 'max_n_lines', 'pan_step_size', 'zoom_speed', and 'zoom_step_size' have been added. Command line parameter 'n_lines' has been removed.

- A number of bugs have been solved. The most important bugs are:

  - Null pointer exception when creating a map without links.

  - Citation matching algorithm treats DOIs as case-sensitive when creating citation and bibliographic coupling maps.

1.6.4 -> 1.6.5 (September 26, 2016)

- An Overlay Visualization tab has been added to the main panel. This tab replaces the 'Score colors' and 'User defined colors' options available in the options panel when the Network Visualization tab is selected in the main panel. The 'No colors' option is no longer available in the options panel.

- Functionality for creating maps based on bibliographic data and based on text data has been improved and extended:

  - Duplicate records in Web of Science, Scopus, and PubMed files are automatically removed.

  - When creating a map based on bibliographic data from Web of Science or Scopus, a citation threshold can be used to select the items to be included in the map.

  - When creating a map based on bibliographic data from Web of Science or Scopus, additional weights and scores providing normalized and unnormalized citation statistics are calculated.

  - When creating a map based on bibliographic data, item descriptions are no longer generated, except when creating a map of a citation network or a bibliographic coupling network of documents.

  - When creating a map based on bibliographic data, an additional score providing publication year statistics is calculated.

  - When creating a map based on text data from Web of Science or Scopus, an additional score providing unnormalized citation statistics is calculated.

  - When creating a map of a citation network of documents, there can be only one citation link between two documents.

- Standardized weights have been introduced:

  - When a map has been created or a map and a network have been opened, two standardized weights are calculated for each item. One weight is the number of links of an item. The other weight is the total strength of the links of an item. The latter weight is not available when all links in a network have a strength of 1.

  - In the Weights drop down list in the options panel, the standardized weights are always listed above the user-defined weights. By default, the first user-defined weight is selected. If there are no user-defined weights, the total link strength weight is selected by default.

- A large number of command line parameters have been added. In particular, command line parameters have been added for saving maps and saving screenshots.

- A number of changes to the user interface have been made. The most important changes are:

  - Most of the functionality of the information panel has been transferred to the status bar. The information panel is no longer available if there are no item descriptions.

- Support has been added for creating maps based on RIS files.

- Functionality has been added for automatically determining the values of the attraction and repulsion parameters of the layout technique when creating a map. Co-authorship maps of authors, keyword co-occurrence maps, and citation maps of documents use values of, respectively, -1, 0, and 0 for the repulsion parameter. All other maps use a value of 1 for the repulsion parameter. The attraction parameter always has a value of 2.

- When creating a map based on bibliographic data, the default choice for the number of items has been set to 500. Previously, the default choice was to include all items.

- Optimization algorithm of the clustering technique has been improved based on the idea of 'fast local moving'.

- Items may have no cluster assignment.

- Functionality has been added for removing small clusters from the results of the clustering technique. When small clusters are removed, items belonging to these clusters have no cluster assignment.

- A number of algorithmic changes have been made:

  - Data structure for storing networks has been changed. Networks are stored in a sparse format rather than in the full format that was used previously. This leads to a significant reduction in memory usage in the case of sparse networks.

  - Option has been added in the Advanced Parameters dialog box for using the LinLog/modularity normalization.

  - VOS mapping technique has been generalized. Two new parameters, the mapping attraction and the mapping repulsion, have been made available on the Map tab. Changing the values of these parameters may in some cases lead to more satisfactory mapping results.
