Abstract

In this work, the microstructure, mechanical behavior, magnetic properties and in-vitro biocompatibility of Fe77Mo5P9C7.5B1.5bulk metallic glass (BMG) composite were systematically investigated. The Fe77Mo5P9C7.5B1.5 BMG composite, with a very high yield strength (~2900 MPa) and a moderate plasticity (~ 4%), exhibits a degradation rate as high as pure iron in simulated body fluid (SBF). More importantly, the present Fe-based BMG composite significantly inhibits the growth of Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) with no obvious cell cytotoxicity, demonstrating that it can be used as a potential biodegradable metal in the future.
