Hydrogen release behavior and antibacterial property of Mg-4Zn-xSn alloys (x= 0, 1.0, 1.5 wt. %) were investigated by immersion tests, colony counting method and antibacterial adhesion, respectively. Results show that Sn-contained Mg-4Zn alloys have lower hydrogen release and better antibacterial property to Staphylococcus aureus (S. aureus) than that of Mg-4Zn alloy, for Sn incorporated in the surface film. Zn2+ and Sn2+/Sn4+ ions degraded from the alloys are the main cause for the high antibacterial effect. It provides an effective way to design materials to solve current shortcomings of biodegradable Mg alloys.
