中国的环境是否有可能不可修复？

北京等地雾霾，俺想起了2011年秋季给“中国环境与发展”课程考试出的一个问题：
Comment on the following statement: “International experience suggests that China’s ‘pollute and develop now, clean up later’ approach is a natural and reasonable path for its development.”
为什么中国不能“先污染后治理”？学生应该从如下几点考虑：
1）No model for China to follow given China's characteristics in geography, demography, stage of economic development and others
2）Higher cost to remedy the damage, including that to health of citizens
3）The possibility to reach point of no return, that is, environment could be irreparable
俺觉得这第三点最令人担忧——中国的环境是否有可能不可修复？
