钱理群在《王瑶怎样当北大教授》回忆到，“答辩前夕开始找你谈话，给你“锦囊妙计”，教你如何应付答辩。以后我当了导师，就将王瑶的锦囊妙计传给我的学生。王先生说，答辩的时候要掌握好两条原则。一条原则就是答辩老师提的问题如果跟你论文要害的部分没关系，无关紧要，不会影响你的论文的通过，你最好不要详细地回答，说几句带过去就行了，别说多了，因为言多必失，会把你的知识漏洞都暴露出来，你说漏了一句被答辩老师抓住，他穷追不舍，你就非常狼狈。最好想办法一句话堵住不再追问，实在不行就干脆说：老师，这个问题我没想好，我再下去想一想。他总不能不准你想啊。或者老老实实承认：你说得很对，这是我的错误。也就到此为止了。但是，还得有另一条：如果提出的质问涉及你的基本观点，你就不能让步，必须据理力争，即使面红耳赤你也得争。因为你要是承认错了，或者承认考虑不周，你的论文就完了。而且你心里要有数：表面看来你是学生，而且处在被质疑的被动地位，但从另一个角度看，你又是主动的，因为在具体被质问的这个问题上，你是专家，对这个题目你比这些考官都熟悉，你思考得也最多、最充分，你是最强的，也是最有发言权的，所以你必须而且能够据理力争。你最好的方法是抛材料，用你所熟知而老师未必知道的事实材料来证明你的观点，变被动为主动。”
