Bioleaching Study of Chalcopyrite Mineral Processing Solid Waste by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and Thiobacillus thiooxidans

Li D, Li DW, Liang ZR, Zhang SJ

Abstract: Chalcopyrite mineral processing solid waste(CMPSW), produced from processing and extraction of chalcopyrite, not only leads to land occupation, but also contaminates local water, air and soil. Therefore, CMPSW by Thiobacillus ferrooxidans and Thiobacillus thiooxidans is considered. The interactions between microorganism, CMPSW particles, catalysts and bioleaching products were studied. It is demonstrated that the microorganism growth and the heavy metals leaching efficiency involves biological and chemical interactions. The tests results suggested that the T.t was best to bioleached the CMPSW and the T.f was not as good as T.t. The leaching effect of mixed bacterias of T.t and T.f fell in between, the leaching rate would decrease when the pulp density increased. The micro-morphology of bacteria was observed by SEM, the single cellular dimension of bioleaching bactreia was about (1 similar to 2) mu m x (0.2 similar to 0.5) mu m.
