英语中词组/短语的平行结构
在中文中，表达三个或三个以上词组/短语的平行结构的常用形式是‘ABC’(例如: “党政军”) 或‘A、B、C’(例如: “政治、经济、文化”)或‘A、B和C’(例如: “政治、经济和文化”); 但在英语中，最常用的也是逻辑上最清楚的形式是‘A, B, and C’ (for example, “party, government, and people”).
Of course, different disciplines and/or journals may have different writing styles. As far as I know, the “Nature” magazine and APA style explicitly require authors to use the ‘A, B, and C’ construct for parallel structures involving short terms.
The “Nature” magazine recommends authors to follow William Strunk, Jr.'s book “The Elements of Styles”, which is now freely available on the Internet (http://www.bartleby.com/141/). As stated in the book, “in a series of three or more terms with a single conjunction, use a comma after each term except the last.”
APA (American Psychological Association) style is a writing style widely adopted in many disciplines of social sciences and humanities. Here is a very good tutorial on how to write well-constructed parallelism in APA style (http://blog.apastyle.org/apastyle/2010/02/lists-part-1-parallelism.html).
The sentence mentioned in the blog “SCI中的语言之美” is indeed beautifully-written; but if we are going to follow William Strunk, Jr.’s suggested style, it should be re-written as: “Without Leaves, Without Buds, And Without Flowers, Yet, They Form Fruit; As A Food, As A Tonic, And As A Medicine, The Entire Creation Is Precious”.
