But then, as soon as I start writing it, I feel it is such a good thing that we do pause and think about WHAT I have done in the past year.
We all know that time goes by quickly, especially when we are busy working. (Sure, if you are bored to death, then the time seems to get stuck like a broken clock.)
How can one recall what has happened in that long year? Well, I do this by using an html web page. All formative numerical experiments are posted timely for weekly skype conference calls, and all email exchanges are filed in a folder. So, all I have to do is to go look at mail in my email folder, labeled "ASOMZ (Arabian Sea oxygen minimum zone)."
So, this is what I have for my annual report:
4. Major progresses of the Indian Ocean ecosystem modeling project:
a)
Iron limitation vs. nutrient limitation ended in August 2010, when we realized that iron limitation only shifted the excess biomass problem to excess nutrient problem. The fundamental issue is to reach nutrient balance in the system.
b) Perfect OMZs were obtained toward the end of 2010. Yu gave an OCN seminar on January 20, 2011. The next step was to finish writing the paper, except for one big hurdle, that is, the ecosystem relied on huge vertical mixing values at mid ocean depth. There is no observational support for such a high mixing regime. This struggle continued until mid March, 2011, when Raleigh (a marine biologist) came up with a new realization that ws/e=constant (ratio of sinking rate and reminerization rate being constant) means we could use 10 times smaller ws and e, and enter a horizontal advection regime (instead of a vertical mixing regime).
c) Now, we are fine tuning the model and are confident for publishing a very good research paper on the OMZs.
