A very handsome young man greeted me with a big smile in the morning: “Happy Birthday!”
There, email came from all over the world, since yesterday,
including an open invitation for a home stay in Bangkok!
At work, I received graceful lei made from white ginger
flowers, and a box of chocolate candies. Many of my students wished me "Happy Birthday" before or after their second midterm...
On the way home, the young man asked to be dropped off at the Times Supermarket, to buy some solution to clean his pine cones for his AP Bio. A very strange thing to do, but I failed to reason with him. He thanked me for dropping him off, and I drove off.
A while later, there was a knock on the door. I wondered what kind of delivery it would be, since we usually don’t have unexpected visitors. Yes, people call, before they come over. It was the handsome young man, and both of his hands were full: flowers in one hand, and my favorite “Ogura” cake in the other (a cake flavored with azuki bean paste). How sweet, but it had to wait!
Because, there was a dinner at the Assaggio’s, right across the street from us. I ordered a fish salad, thinking about the Ogura cake waiting at home. Still, I failed to even taste the cake, because the lei indicated it’s my special day and I was given a slice of New York cheese cake for free. (Yes, by all means you should go to a nice restaurant with a birthday lei; then you are likely to get some free dessert ) Oh, I will miss you on my next birthday, because no matter where I will be I am sure you will be a thousand miles away, my beloved son!
The dinner ended with a fun game we used to play, whenever there was a preserved cherry in sight. It has been a while since I played it last time, but I was just as good!
New York cheese cake on the house.
A perfect knot!
