前几天添了一本The Cambridge Companion系列中的American Realism and Naturalism，“自然主义”，牛津词典有两个解释：

1.1基于自然基础的道德或宗教体系（Action arising from, or based on, natural instincts, withoutspiritual guidance; a system of morality or religion having apurely natural basis.）

    2.2 基于自然律的世界观和人生观（A view of the world, and of man's relation to it, in which only the operation of natural (as opposed to supernatural or spiritual) laws and forces is admitted or assumed. Also, the view that moral concepts can be analysed in terms of concepts applicableto natural phenomena.）

在文艺创作中，它既排斥浪漫主义的想象也反对现实主义的素描，它老老实实写“本来的样子”，如左拉说的，看见什么写什么，道德教训留给道德家。

总的说来，自然主义是用自然现象和自然律来解释一切——那么，自然主义如何落实到自然科学呢？科学本身还不能解释一切呢。

Sean B. Carroll在新书The Big Picture. On the Originsof Life, Meaning, and the Universe Itself（Dutton, 2016）中提出一个有趣的说法：诗意的自然主义（poetic naturalism）。“自然主义”坚定一个自然的世界，而“诗意”为一个世界添加多重色彩。（“Naturalism” claims that there is just one world, the natural world; we’ll explore some of the indications that point us in that direction,including how the universe moves and evolves. “Poetic” reminds us that there ismore than one way of talking about the world.）

诗意的自然主义把“美的自然主义”——以美学原则作为自然律的一个标准——推得更远，它不再局限于因果律的探究，还要深入价值和意义等非传统科学的问题。自然科学不能圆满认识自然，因为自然还有诗意；以诗意的科学来看，自然图景就自然而完整多了。看Ernst Haeckel的自然的艺术形态（Kunstformen der Natur），我惊讶为什么越是低级的生命，越是对称，如果老天有请，似乎真的是在借生命形式来实现自然的美和诗意。那么我们追求诗意，不过是遗传基因的表象而已。

但退一步想，这样的观点是让自然科学更丰富了还是更模糊了？也许有的东西就是不能进入科学的领地——正如不懂几何的人不许入门一样。
