George Gabriel Stokes:54 years on Lucasian chair
The Lucasian Chair will celebrate the 344th anniversary of its founding December 2007.This chair of Mathematics is probably the most famous academic chair at
Sir Isaac Newton is the second holder of the chair, his teacher the first one;
Among the 17 Lucasian professor, George Gabriel Stokes(13 Aug 1819-1 Feb 1903) is the only one who have held the famous academic chair for half a century.Sir George Stokes,a Physics & Fluid Mechanics professor, took the Chair in 1849, until his death in 1903. Becoming famous scientist for his part in the Navier-Stokes equations in fluid dynamics, Stokes restored the Lucasian Chair to the level that
Scientists and engineers can find Stokes Law, Stokes Theorem, Stokes Phenomenon, Stokes conjecture and the Navier-Stokes equations in scientific works of mathematics, physics and engineering.
In physical geodesy publics , Stokes formula for geodetic boundary value problem
will continue its using in the principles of geodetic researches.
