∮1 德国地质古生物学家Karl Wilhelm von Gümbel 男爵(院士)(1823--1898)

        德国地质古生物学家Karl Wilhelm von Gümbel 男爵(院士)(1823--1898)是苔藓植物学家Wilhelm Theodor von Gümbel院士 (1812--1858)的弟弟。Karl Wilhelm von Gümbel于1823年出生于德国莱茵兰-普法尔茨州(Rhineland-Palatinate)小镇Dannenfels，他在少年时代因受哥哥的影响对自然科学产生兴趣。

      1843年，Karl Wilhelm von Gümbel入读慕尼黑大学(University of Munich /Universität München)，学习化学、动物学和矿物学等。他是Karl Franz Emil von Schafhäutl (1803--1890)的学生。不过，这对师徒后来成为有名的论敌（或学敌）。1847年，Karl Wilhelm von Gümbel还到海德堡大学学习一段时间。

--1823: Born in Dannenfels, Rhineland-Palatinate (莱茵兰-普法尔茨), SW Germany [NB: Father--Johann Friedrich Gümbel (1775–1841), mother-- Charlotte Roos (1781–1862) and elder brother--Wilhelm Theodor von Gümbel (1812--1858)];

--Attended a high school in Zweibrücken of Rhineland-Palatinate, where bryologist  Wilhelm Theodor von Gümbel (1812--1858) taught and inspired his younger brother’s interests in botany, etc;

--1843: Began to study chemistry, zoology and mineralogy at the University of Munich (German: Universität München) and became German naturalist and musicologist Professor Karl Franz Emil von Schafhäutl’s (1803--1890) student;

--1847: Studied at the University of Heidelberg;

--1848: Passed the mining examination for civil service;

--1850: Worked as mining surveyor for the Mining Office of St. Ingbert in Saarland (萨尔兰);

--1851--1898:  Appointed as a chief geologist the Geological Survey of Bavaria in 1851 and held the position for 47 years;

--1853: [NB: Elder brother Wilhelm Theodor von Gümbel (1812--1858) was elected to the Landbauwissenschaften section of the German Academy of Sciences—Leopoldina;]

--1858: Geological map of Bavaria appeared;

--1861—1879: Published Geognostische Beschreibung des Königreichs Bayern in 3 volumes (1861, 1868 and 1879);

--1862: Obtained a doctorate degree from the University of Munich;

--1863: Appointed as an honorary professor of geology and mining at the university of Munich;

--1875: Elected to the “Geologie und Paläontologie” section of the German Academy of Sciences—Leopoldina;

--1884—1894:  Published Geologie von Bayern in 2 vols;

--1898: Died at age of 75.
