Paul A. Samuelson不是个庸人

上大学的时候读到商务印书馆翻译出版的Paul A. Samuelson的《经济学》，虽然读得半生不熟，收获还是不小。
上周日Paul A. Samuelson去世，《纽约时报》上当天发布的讣告很值得一读。

讣告中有两段话让我觉得很有意思。
一段是：
"I don’t care who writes a nation’s laws — or crafts its advanced treatises — if I can write its economics textbooks,” Mr. Samuelson said. （大意：Samuelson先生说：“只要俺能写这个国家的经济学教科书，俺才不关心谁制定了一个国家的法律，或者谁又对之进行了完善。”）
另一段是：
Though Mr. Samuelson was President Kennedy’s first choice to become chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers, he refused, on principle, to take any government office because, he said, he did not want to put himself in a position in which he could not say and write what he believed. （大意：虽然Samuelson先生曾经是Kennedy总统经济顾问委员会主席的首选对象，他不仅拒绝了这一职位，而且原则上拒绝了担任任何政府职位。他说，他不愿把自己置于不能说出和写作自己相信东西的地步。）
维基百科上说：
Samuelson was one of the first economists to generalize and apply mathematical methods developed for the study of thermodynamics to economics. （大意：Samuelson是率先将热力学研究中发展的数学方法普遍化并应用到经济学中的经济学家之一。）
