Quotations from a delightful little book
My daughter gave me a delightful little book this past summer
for Father’s day.
T. Cathcart and D. Klein, “Plato and a Platypus Walk into a Bar –
Understanding Philosophy through Jokes”, Abrams Image Publisher, New
York, 2007, ISBN10: 0-8109-1493-K8
I am re-reading it and was particularly impressed by the following quotation from the book:
“An optimist thinks that this is the best of all possible worlds. A pessimist
fears that this is so.”
The Optimist says, “The glass is half full”
The Pessimist says, “The glass is half empty”
The Rationalist (in the philosophical sense) says, “The glass is twice as big as it needs be”
It seems to me that through out life we play the different roles of optimists, pessimists and rationalist at different times, and sometimes at the wrong times. Much of our debates depend on the roles we play.
