Climate Change, Amazon forest, and the Brazilian famers.
The Amazon jungle of Brazil is often referred to as the lung of the planet earth. It breathes in tremendous amount of CO2, store the carbon in its trunk and branches, and give back live sustaining oxygen for the humans of the world. It is most important for the health of the world population and slows down climate change. However, the country of Brazil and her population does not get repaid for providing this benefit to the rest of the world. In fact, many of the Brazilian farmers live at subsistence level. Thus, although not talked about, Brazil has been engaged in a form of reasonable and legitimate blackmail by allowing her farmers to clear large tracks of the Amazon forest and convert them to agriculture land. This is very alarming for the health of the earth in the long run. Thus, a move is afoot to find ways for the rest of the world to repay Brazil for the benefits we all derive from the forest. The question is how and what is fair for each country. An equitable solution hopefully can be devised soon.
